Major Jeremy H. Groefsema VMFA(AW)-533 Executive Officer

Jeremy “Goofy” Groefsema was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 2003 through the Officer Candidate School after receiving a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) degree from Whitworth College, Spokane.  After moving to Pensacola, FL, 1stLt Groefsema was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 2006.  Following F/A-18 training as a “Shooter” of VMFAT-101, he reported to Marine Aircraft Group-11, MCAS Miramar, where he joined the “Bats” of VMFA(AW)-242.  While there, he served as Schedules Officer and SACO moving with the squadron to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan before reporting to MARCENT as an Individual Augment to the Counter Insurgency Academy in Taji, Iraq supporting Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.  Returning to VMFA(AW)-242, he served as the Responsible Officer, Embark Officer, Assistant Logistics Officer, and Assistant Operations Officer.

In March 2011, Captain Groefsema reported to 3d Battalion, 3d Marines for duty as the Battalion Air Officer.  During his time with 3/3, he deployed to Helmand province, Afghanistan supporting Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Following deployment, Captain Groefsema joined MAG-31 and the “Hawks” of VMFA(AW)-533 where he served as the S-6 Officer and Assistant Operations Officer, S-1 Officer in Charge, and Director of Standardization and Safety. It was during this tour that he executed two WestPac deployments in 2013 and 2014/15 as well as a CENTCOM deployment in support of RFF 1200 executing missions in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.

Leaving the “Hawks” in August 2016, Major Groefsema reported to Headquarters Task Force 51/5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade for duties as Aviation Operations Planner. Over the next year, he would spend time in Baghdad Iraq as the Liaison to the Combined Joint Force Land Component Command (CJFLCC) as well as in Jordan and Djibouti.

In June 2017, Major Groefsema reported to VMFA(AW)-533, where he assumed his current billet as the “Hawks” Executive Officer in July of 2017.
