SgtMaj Martinez joined the Marine Corps in October 1998 and underwent recruit training at Parris Island, South Carolina 2nd Battalion, Golf Company. Upon graduation from recruit training and MOS school as an administrative clerk, he served his first tour with Marine Liaison Element, (formerly 2nd Anglico) II MEF, Camp Lejuene, NC, where he was meritoriously promoted to the ranks of lance corporal and corporal and also attended jump school at Fort Benning GA.
In April 2000, Corporal Martinez was reassigned to II MEF Headquarters Group, Camp Lejuene, NC as the S-3 Training NCO.
In July 2000, Corporal Martinez was reassigned to Marine Aviation Training Support Group 21, NAS Pensacola, FL, where he served as an orders clerk and was also promoted to the rank of Sergeant. During this time Sergeant Martinez served as the Group’s Color Sergeant. After the 9/11 attacks he was transferred to Naval Security Group, NAS Pensacola, FL where he worked as a Military Police Augment.
In December 2002, Sergeant Martinez received orders to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of Drill Instructor school he was assigned to Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment as a Drill Instructor. After working four Platoons he was assigned to Special Training Company, Evaluation Holding Platoon, where he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. After returning to 2nd Battalion and completing four more successful cycles he received orders to HQMC, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Quantico, VA.
In March 2006 Staff Sergeant Martinez was assigned to Manpower Manage Support Branch (MMSB-31) fitness report compliance section and served as the SNCOIC of research and compliance. During his time in Quantico Staff Sergeant Martinez served as a Sergeant Instructor for OCS Summers 2007, 2008. In addition, was an Inspector General (IG) augment for the section of Performance Evaluation System (PES), coordinating numerous inspections throughout his assignment.
In December 2008 he was selected for Assistant Marine Officer Instructor Duty and was transferred in May 2008 to the University of Washington in Seattle, WA where he served as the senior enlisted advisor of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC). In the summer of 2009 he was assigned as a summer augment at the Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, CA. During this assignment he served as Company First Sergeant for the Midshipmen Summer Training Group where he led them through the Mountain Summer Training Package. In the summer of 2010 Gunnery Sergeant Martinez served as a Sergeant Instructor for OCS.
On May 1st, 2011, Gunnery Sergeant Martinez was assigned to 3rd Marine Special Operations Battalion(3dMSOB) as the Administrative Chief for the Battalion, later that year he was assigned as the Headquarters & Service Company First Sergeant.
In September of 2012, he attended Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) school additionally completing Jump Master (JM) training at Fort Bragg, NC serving as a Battalion Jump Master.
In March of 2013 Gunnery Sergeant Martinez deployed as an Individual Augment (IA) with Special Operations Joint Task Force –Afghanistan(SOJTF-A), based out of Camp Integrity, Kabul supporting special operations in Regional Command East (RC-east).
After returning from deployment to 3dMSOB, Gunnery Sergeant Martinez was selected and frocked to the rank of First Sergeant.
In January of 2014 he was reassigned as the Company First Sergeant, Weapons Company, 1st Battalion 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division. While assigned with the Company he deployed to Okinawa, Japan on a Unit Deployment Program (UDP) and participated in Operations such as Balikatan 2014, Philippines and numerous training exercises. Upon return from UDP he was reassigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 8th Marines.
In March of 2015 First Sergeant Martinez was assigned to Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion 8th Marines. During this time he deployed to Eastern Europe with Black Sea Rotational Force 16.1 Crisis Response. He participated in multiple NATO military to military exercises and supported/mentored several foreign military NCO development programs within this area of operations.
In August of 2016, he was transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island.
First Sergeant Martinez was hand selected to serve as the first male First Sergeant assigned to 4th Recruit Training Battalion, where he served as a Company First Sergeant for Oscar and November Company.
On April 20th, First Sergeant Martinez was frocked to the rank of Sergeant Major and executed orders to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 251 (VMFA 251), MAG 31, MCAS Beaufort, SC where he currently serves as the Squadron Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major Martinez’s personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with three gold stars.
