MAG-31 Commanding Officer
Colonel Shawn M. Basco

Graduated Parris Island in July, 1989 and then was assigned to VMAQ-2 as an Avionics Technician.  During his tour at VMAQ-2, Staff Sergeant Basco participated in Operations DESERT SHIELD and STORM and twice deployed to Iwakuni, Japan.  While serving with VMAQ-2, SSgt Basco earned a Bachelors Degree and was selected for the Enlisted Commissioning Program and commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1995.

In April 2000, Capt. Basco reported to VMFA (AW)-242 in Miramar, CA where he deployed to Iwakuni, Japan.  While in the Bats, he served as Avionics Officer and Quality Assurance Officer.  In 2002 Capt. Basco was assigned to 1st Battalion 5th Marines, as a Forward Air Controller during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (I). In July 2003, he reported to VMFA-115 Silver Eagles in Beaufort, SC and deployed aboard the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM (II).  In 2005, he graduated from TOPGUN and served as the Pilot Training Officer.
In 2006, Maj. Basco attended the Naval War College and was then assigned to HQMC Aviation Branch (APP-31, TacAir Integration) and was the Aide de Camp to the Deputy Commandant to Marine Aviation in the Pentagon. In 2009, Maj. Basco served as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer and Executive Officer of VMFAT-501 at Eglin AFB. In 2011, he returned to MAG-31 as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer and Executive Officer of VMFA-122.  In 2013, LtCol Basco deployed with II MEF (FWD) Helmand Province, Afghanistan as the Military Assistant to the Commander of RC(SW).  From 2014 - 2016, LtCol Basco commanded VMFA (AW)-242 in Iwakuni, Japan.  In 2017, LtCol Basco attended Top Level School at the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy. In 2017, Colonel Basco served as the Chief of Staff to the Chairman of NATO in Brussels, Belgium until 2019.
Personal awards include: the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star with “V”, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Individual-Action Air Medal with “V”, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon. In 2003, he received the Defender of Freedom award in Washington DC.
He holds Bachelors of Science, Masters, and a Ph.D.
Currently, he is assigned to MAG-31 in Beaufort, SC.
